Design Summary & Analysis Draft 1

In the article “Smart Running Shoes: Will They Change The Way You Run?”, Lin (2017) discusses the functions and features of different versions of the Altra smart running shoes. In 2011, the first model of Altra IQ was introduced to the market. Sensors are incorporated in the soles of the shoes which can deliver “Real-time stride analysis”. The responses will then be relayed through smart devices such as "smart watches, phones, and earbuds". In 2017, engineers who invented the Altra smart shoes claimed that it was designed to not only record statistics but also “help runners avoid repetitive injuries” by tracking the user's "footfalls in real-time” via an app. An audio assistant prompts the user to rectify their movements to prevent injury. Finally, Lin (2017) asserts that unique functions do not compromise the ergonomics of the shoes.

Though I agree that the functions of smart running shoes can improve runners' performance, I don't believe its the best method for improvement.

One method that can be used when trying to improve running performance is to focus on one or two changes each time. The Torin IQ is a model of smart running shoes made by Altra and is equipped with a voice assistant that advises you during your run to prevent injury. However, when used by inexperienced runners, they may try to fix too many problems at once which results in getting injured. According to Mallory (2019), our body is normally able to accommodate small modifications as long as we make adjustments slowly. "But the bigger changes bring on injuries", therefore runners should single out one or two problems they should work on, practice on changing it and checking to see if they have adapted in a few weeks. Therefore runners should fix each problem at a time to improve their running performance.

Another method is to get help from a running coach who can help runners work towards their fitness goals. As stated by Katie (2014), runners will have structured programs planned by the coaches which include warm-ups, cool downs and most importantly prevent injuries. Coaches can answer any queries, alter your training program as well as help you with your recovery. Also, they have great advice for nutrition which is an important aspect of recovery and improving performance. Because of this, getting a running coach would be more helpful in enhancing a runner's performance.

Another method is to use a smartwatch which is a more popular choice in the present. Smartwatches have features that can track heart rate and sleep, they can also be used for many different workouts other than running. According to Kieran (2020), some models of smartwatches allow you to add smart coaching for training programs that the user has chosen to work on for their fitness goals.

In Conclusion, having a pair of smart running shoes is not the most effective way to improve running performance as there are better alternatives to achieve this.
